Begin your adventure by departing from Athens and heading west along the scenic coastal road to the Corinth Canal, where we’ll take a short stop to enjoy breathtaking views. The Corinth Canal is a vital maritime passage, connecting ships from the western Mediterranean, Adriatic, and the eastern Mediterranean to Black Sea ports.
We’ll continue along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf to Epidaurus, where we’ll visit the ancient theatre of the city. Situated on the headland of “Nesi” at Palaia Epidaurus, the theatre is well-preserved and famous for its extraordinary acoustics. The unamplified spoken word can be heard clearly by all 12,000 spectators, regardless of their seat.
Afterward, we head to Nauplion, Greece’s first capital in 1829, for a brief photo stop before continuing to Mycenae, the legendary kingdom of Agamemnon. Known as “Mycenae, Rich in Gold,” this was one of the most significant and wealthiest centers of the Late Bronze Age and played a crucial role in Greek prehistory. In the afternoon, we depart for Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where we will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.
We begin with a visit to the Archaeological Site of Olympia, which is dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods. Nestled at the foot of Mount Kronios and surrounded by the confluence of the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers, Olympia was the most important religious and athletic center in ancient Greece. The Olympic Games, held every four years to honor Zeus, were the most prestigious national festival of the ancient world.
After exploring the Archaeological Site and the Museum, we continue our journey via Patras to Rion, where we’ll cross the stunning Rion-Antirion suspension bridge, the longest and most modern in Europe. We will drive through the picturesque town of Nafpaktos before continuing to Delphi. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel in Delphi.
Delphi, located at the foot of Mount Parnassus, was the most famous oracle of ancient Greece and was regarded as the center of the world. According to mythology, this is where Zeus’s eagles met after being sent out to find the navel of the world. Delphi served as a cultural and religious hub for centuries, and its sanctuary was the venue for the Pythian Games, second only to the Olympic Games in importance.
We will visit the Archaeological Site and the Museum, home to incredible treasures such as the bronze statue of the Charioteer, dedicated to Apollo in 478 B.C. after winning the chariot race at the Pythian Games. This masterpiece is an iconic example of the severe Attic style.
After the visits, enjoy two hours of leisure time in Delphi before we begin the drive back to Athens, passing through the village of Arachova, renowned for its vibrant rugs and carpets, and arriving in Athens early in the evening.
